As reflected in the heartfelt tributes listed at the end of this JustGiving call from Prof Amala Soumyanath (Portland), Prof. Clara Lau (Hong Kong), Professor Jayne Lawrence MBE (Manchester, on behalf of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences), and Prof. Michael Heinrich (London, on behalf of the Society for Medicinal Plant and Natural Product Research, aka GA), 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐫 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐨𝐧 was not only a brilliant scientist and inspiring mentor but also a cherished leader in the global community of traditional, complementary and integrative medicine.
Without 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐫 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐨𝐧, initiatives like GP-TCM, GP-TCM RA, and King’s CICM would likely never have happened.
· 𝐺𝑜𝑜𝑑 𝑃𝑟𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝑇𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝐶ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑒 𝑀𝑒𝑑𝑖𝑐𝑖𝑛𝑒 𝑅𝑒𝑠𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑐ℎ 𝑖𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑃𝑜𝑠𝑡-𝐺𝑒𝑛𝑜𝑚𝑖𝑐 𝐸𝑟𝑎(𝐺𝑃-𝑇𝐶𝑀): A 1-million euro EU-China collaboration on the modernisation of TCM research, funded by the EU’s Seventh Framework Programme
· 𝐺𝑜𝑜𝑑 𝑃𝑟𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝑇𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝐶ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑒 𝑀𝑒𝑑𝑖𝑐𝑖𝑛𝑒 𝑅𝑒𝑠𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑐ℎ 𝐴𝑠𝑠𝑜𝑐𝑖𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 (GP-TCM RA): Founded by GP-TCM, it has grown into an established UK charity, an advisory body to the European Medicines Agency and a thriving international society.
· 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝐾𝑖𝑛𝑔’𝑠 𝐶𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑟𝑒 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝐼𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝐶ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑒 𝑀𝑒𝑑𝑖𝑐𝑖𝑛𝑒 (𝐾𝑖𝑛𝑔’𝑠 𝐶𝐼𝐶𝑀): As a research-led initiative, it was built on the GP-TCM and GP-TCM RA networks, aiming to catalyse innovation by integrating the wisdom, resources, and expertise of TCM and modern medical science.
Back in 2007, it was 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐫 𝐏𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐨𝐧 who introduced GP-TCM to his vast network, and much of the support we received was thanks to his endorsement.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 will fund research training programmes at King’s CICM, King’s College London, supervised by the best minds in integrative medicine, as exemplified by our King’s CICM Staff, Honorary Advisors and Collaborators.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 will nurture the next generation of talents and drive progress in natural medicine research, particularly in bridging TCM and conventional medical practice.
